Meeting with a family law solicitor for the first time following the breakdown of a relationship can seem very stressful and nerve wracking as you will be going through a difficult time. However, this initial meeting will help you navigate your issues and figure out a short-term plan.
Every client has different personal circumstances. Some are in a place where they are ready to take practical steps whilst others are only just considering their options.
Here are some tips that will help you prepare for your first meeting: –
Make a list of the main issues which you would like to cover
This can help you focus on exactly what you want to achieve in the meeting and allow it to be more productive.
Write down any questions that you would like to ask
The first meeting can go by very quickly and it is easy to forget any questions that you had in mind.
Try to prepare a chronology of key dates
This will help your solicitor to advise you during the meeting and with any further work undertaken.
Consider legal costs and funding
The initial meeting will be a free half an hour consultation. Any further instructions will be chargeable at the solicitor’s hourly rate plus VAT. Once you have considered your financial position, don’t be afraid to ask your solicitor for an estimate of costs. This is usually discussed at the first meeting.
The important thing is not to worry. Whilst preparing for the meeting does usually allow your solicitor to provide you with more specific advice and strategies regarding your situation, it is not a must. What is most important is that you obtain legal advice to be aware of your options.
